One Way is Not Better

Posted on June 11, 2025August 24, 2025 by Kelly

For many crafts, there are multiple ways to do things. For example, the knife grip and pencil grip for crochet. Or hand sewing and machine sewing. There are many examples, but hopefully this helps you get the idea.

With that said, I’m going to get up on my soapbox just a little.

What’s kind of weird to me is that there are people who seem to think that their method is the best, whatever their method might be. There are times when some methods are more appropriate than others, but that doesn’t inherently make them better than another method. Sometimes it all really just comes down to personal preferences.

But from what I’ve seen, those people apparently think it’s their way or the highway type of situation. I just don’t understand this mindset, and I wanted to make sure that you readers knew that it’s kind of a weird way to behave.

I see this a lot in historical costuming circles. Yes, people in the 1300’s (or insert whatever time period here) did hand sew all of their clothing. Because sewing machines did not exist at whatever time they are referencing. That doesn’t mean that we in modern times must also exclusively hand sew our historical costumes if that’s our flavor of fun. You can exclusively hand sew your costumes if you prefer, but that doesn’t make you better than someone that machine sewed theirs.

My opinion is that as long as whatever method you are doing gets the results you want without causing harm to yourself or others, then that method is perfectly fine. Play around with lots of different methodologies. Pick the one you like best or combine a few to create something unique to you. But don’t act as though you are morally superior to anyone to chooses to utilize a different method.
