More Sewing Tools

Posted on March 24, 2025August 12, 2025 by Kelly

I’ve got a confession to make. There are more sewing tools. *gasp* *shock* *horror*

Ok, so that might be a little melodramatic. And honestly, I could probably say that about 50 more times because there seems to be a never-ending array of nifty sewing tools. We covered a few of the very basic ones previously, but let’s talk about some others that I find pretty useful for beginners.

Measuring Tape

When I say measuring tape, you probably think of the metal retractable ones used by construction workers. That is not what I mean when it comes to sewing. Instead, I mean a flexible tape that has the ability to curve and move freely. They certainly can measure the distance between point A and point B, but they are meant to measure a body. You are able to wrap them around the various parts of your body, and they will curve to accurately measure the circumference.

Seam Ripper

We all make mistakes when sewing. I’ve sewn fabric backs to fronts. I’ve sewn things upside down. Wrong pieces together. You name it, I’ve probably done it at some point. So the seam ripper is my best friend. This tool allows you to pick out the wrong stitches and separate the fabric pieces so you can try again.

Marking Pencils/Pens/Chalk

Hear me out – whichever one you use is the best one. Some people prefer the chalk. Some people prefer the pencils. Some people prefer the pens. My preference is generally dependent on the project. They all do the same thing, mark the fabric. The marking might be for cutting lines, stitching lines, matching pattern pieces, or a million other reasons. They generally aren’t supposed to show on the finished product, so these marking options are not intended to be permanent. No Sharpies please!

Pins/Clips

These are used to hold two pieces of fabric together so you can sew them together. It keeps the fabric from shifting and allows the seam to be accurate. But remember, don’t sew over pins! This can cause your sewing machine needle or the pin to break. If they break, they will more or less explode, and fly everywhere. You don’t need an eye injury from sewing, I promise.

Which of these is your favorite sewing tool? There are lots more, so if we haven’t covered your favorite yet, drop it in the comments so we are sure to include it in a future post!
