Let’s Talk Crunchy

Posted on April 2, 2025July 25, 2025 by Kelly

I’ve seen a couple comments of people thinking that I’m promoting “being crunchy.” That’s not a label I put on myself, and let’s talk about it.

What is “Being Crunchy?”

First, let’s define crunchy. I’m sure there is an official definition somewhere, but here’s my personal definition. Someone who is “crunchy” has a preference for natural living, and this might include foods, environmental advocacy, a more sustainable lifestyle, natural medical remedies, and more.

In our society, the crunchy label also can have some negative connotations. They can be portrayed as “hippies” or other counterculture labels, and may come across as out of touch. A lot of this has to do with how they are depicted in the media, and may not be accurate, especially in many cases.

Why I don’t label myself Crunchy

While I might include some of those ideas into this blog, I don’t feel like that’s the overall goal here. I’m not trying to persuade you that any one thing is better than any other thing. I’m simply sharing my knowledge and passion for things of a time that has passed, seeing as many of them appear to be emerging as hobbies again. I was lucky enough to learn many of these things from Nanny, when not everyone had that type of resource in their lives. There may be some overlap with crunchy, but that’s not the purpose.

This blog is intended to teach the “old timey” crafts and skills that many of our ancestors might have known and used. I’m not here to make moral judgements about any of the readers, and hopefully you extend that same grace to me. If you use the information in your quest to be more crunchy, have at it. But my goal is to present the information as neutrally as possible. What are your thoughts on the crunchy label? Do you feel it is positive? Negative? Somewhere in between?
