If you’ve ever wanted to pick up a yarn-based hobby, you’ve probably wondered: what’s the difference between crochet and knitting? Both crafts use yarn to create cozy and beautiful projects, but they have distinct techniques, tools, and results.
So what’s the difference?
Difference number 1: I don’t knit. Ok but like for real…what’s the difference?

The Basics: How Crochet and Knitting Work
Crochet uses a single hook to draw loops of yarn through each other. There is typically only a single stitch being worked at a time. You can create very dense or very loose fabrics, depending on the stitch used.
Knitting uses two needles (or more!) to create interlocking loops of yarn. There are multiple stitches being worked simultaneously, or active on the needles, at a time. Knitting created generally more stretchy fabrics. Some knitters may also keep a crochet hook handy to fix mistakes, but they don’t use it in the creation of the fabric.
Speed & Ease of Learning
Crochet may be considered easier to learn, due to only having a single stitch being worked at a time. Mistakes might also be easier to fix. Crochet projects typically work up more quickly, as stitches are larger and use more yarn than knitting.
Knitting can take longer to become proficient, since there are multiple active stitches at a time. There are also more advanced techniques to master, such as casting on, binding off, and more. Knitting projects can also take longer to complete.
So, Should You Crochet or Knit?
Realistically, this is an individual choice. But here are some things to consider:
Choose Crochet If:
- You’re a beginner looking for a simple start.
- You want to make blankets, toys, or sturdy accessories.
- You prefer working with one hook instead of two needles.
Choose Knitting If:
- You want to make clothes, socks, or lightweight scarves.
- You love the look of fine, stretchy, and smooth fabric.
- You don’t mind working with multiple stitches at a time.
Or… why not learn both? Many crafters start with one and eventually learn the other!
I get the knitting bug every now and then, but overall it’s not my jam. I have crocheted for many years, and I love the creative outlet it gives me.
