You’d love to have a garden, but you don’t have a yard. You’d love to have a garden, but you don’t have a space in your yard that is suitable. You’d love to have a garden, but there’s another reason that you can’t.

Let me introduce you to the concept of Container Gardening.
What is container gardening?
It’s pretty much what it sounds like – gardening using containers (or plant pots of various sizes) instead of planting directly into the ground. I have done so much of this through the years, especially when I lived in apartments.
All you really need is an appropriately sized container, some dirt, the plant, and a sunny place to put the container. Repeat for however many plants you want.
What grows well in containers?
More than you might think! As long as you have an adequately sized container, you can grow many different things in containers. I have successfully grown strawberries, raspberries, a peach tree (RIP, thank you hurricane), green beans, tomatoes, bell peppers, okra, various herbs, and even watermelon in containers!
Yes, I said watermelon. It was the little ones, not the monsters you see at the grocery store.
And of course, I’ve grown many flowers in containers. They are probably what you are most used to seeing in pots, and many of them grow well. I don’t recommend growing flowers from a bulb in a container, but I’m sure it’s possible. I personally just haven’t had much luck with it.
How do I get started?
Assess your area and see how much sun you get there. Remember, plants need a certain amount of sunlight to thrive, and that varies by type of plant. Then do some research to see how much room your chosen plant might need, and purchase a pot of the appropriate size. Fill it with dirt, transplant your seedling or plant your seeds, water it regularly and watch it grow!
