Composting

Posted on May 27, 2025August 22, 2025 by Kelly

Some people like to use compost on their soil and plants. It can have lots of good nourishment for your plants, so it’s not a bad idea. You can buy it in bags commercially, or you can make your own.

I remember my grandfather’s huge compost pile, and as a child it seemed a little intimidating. It required work, and it was hot enough that I saw it steaming sometimes. I didn’t really understand much about it, but as an adult I realize that pile was basically a pile of garden gold.

Pick a spot

To start, choose a spot for your compost pile. Ideally, this will be a pretty large area, as you do have to regularly turn your compost pile. You will also most likely need to water the pile, so think about how close it might be to water sources as well. You don’t want it to get soggy, so make sure the area you choose drains fairly well.

Choose your materials

We could talk all day about what goes onto a compost pile. Generally, you want to add both “green” and “brown” to the pile. You don’t want anything stinky or rotten, but you can add some kitchen scraps. Grass clippings from mowing the lawn are a great thing to add. You can also add cardboard, sticks, shredded paper, and tea bags.

Wait

Turning these things into compost is a lengthy process. Like it can take months for the materials to decompose enough to use in your garden. You will need to keep the pile moist (not soggy!) and turn it regular to mix and aerate the pile. Some people also cover their pile to keep the heat and moisture more consistent. Be patient, as not everything you put on the pile will decompose at the same rate.

You’ll know your compost is ready when it looks mostly like soil. You can then use it in your garden, much like fertilizer. It’s a slow process, but can be worth it!

What do you think about composting? Is it more work and time than you thought?
