Cats: A Musical Review

Posted on May 17, 2025August 22, 2025 by Kelly

Cats is a weird musical. The whole premise is just odd. It’s a bunch of cats, gathering together to chose which one gets to go to kitty heaven, and they each sing a song about why they are awesome. And there is a bunch of dancing.

I do like the music, it’s super catchy and fun. I have seen the show live, and I do enjoy the show. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a weird idea for a show.

With all that said, the gold standard video of Cats for me is the 1998 version. It is a fair recreation of the stage show and I feel does a good job of showcasing all the different parts of the show.

The 2019 Cats movie, on the other hand, is a fever dream of insanity. With all of the big names in the movie, you would think that it would be good.

You would be wrong.

The dancing is good. The singing is ok.

The CGI cat suits are awful. And to me, the overlaid story that attempts to make the show have a cohesive story is just weird.

I kind of hated it.

I feel like Cats is a polarizing show at the best of times, and this movie didn’t help that at all. Have you seen Cats? Did you see the movie version? What did you think?
