Baking for a Holiday

Posted on July 4, 2025September 17, 2025 by Kelly

Today is the 4th of July, so Happy Independence Day for the US!

This made me think about baking for holidays. Some holidays are more obviously suited for baking, while others might not be. I think most of us can agree that Christmas tends to be a big baking time, but something like Labor Day probably wouldn’t be. I suppose you could bake for any holiday, you do you!

Holiday Colors

One easy way to make almost any treat be holiday themed is to use the colors that are generally associated with that holiday. 4th of July? Use red, white, and blue. Mardi Gras? Use yellow, green, and purple. Almost every holiday has at least one color that is associated with it, so you can absolutely lean into that with your baking.

Holiday Scents/Flavors

Another way is to use any scents or flavors that are associated with a holiday. Christmas cookies? Maybe you can use peppermint or cinnamon. Halloween treats? You can use pumpkin or pumpkin spice to flavor your treats. New Year’s? Try using champagne flavors. Be creative and see what is out there.

Shapes

Lastly, you can use shapes to help get the holiday theme across. Obviously, there are cookie cutter shapes for major holidays like Christmas, but these days they make cutters for almost anything. Think outside the box as well, you are only limited by your imagination. You can use them on things other than cookies too – try making shapes from brownies or other bars.

Have you ever made holiday themed treats for holidays other than Christmas? Share your ideas, I love adding new things to my repertoire!
