Slip Stitch

Posted on June 19, 2025August 30, 2025 by Kelly

In crochet, there is such a thing as a slip stitch. It’s mostly used as a joining stitch, or to move to a different area of your project without having to cut the yarn and restart. You can also use them to add a decorative element to your project such as words. I don’t recommend slip stitching across a large area if you are just moving to a different area, but a stitch or two is generally fine.

In general, the slip stitch is going to be the shortest or simplest stitch. Which means that you should have no trouble getting it down pat, since we’ve already covered harder stitches!

To slip stitch, insert your hook into the V of the stitch you are working into. Yarn over and then pull the yarn through all of the loops on your hook. That’s it!

So why do we slip stitch? Mainly it’s so we don’t add height to a row. You’ll notice that this stitch is very short, almost unnoticeable. Even a single crochet has some height to it, so it might not be the ideal choice. We can also use a slip stitch to join a new color of yarn, although there are other ways to do that as well.

Easy peasy!
