Phantom of the Opera: A Musical Review

Posted on June 14, 2025August 30, 2025 by Kelly

This musical is one of the reasons I wanted to touch on actual operas. Now that we have a good idea about what an opera is, we (hopefully) can see that this is not an opera.

That’s right, Phantom of the Opera is not an opera. It’s a musical. About an opera house and opera singers. But it’s not an opera.

This happens to be a pet peeve of mine. A lot of people say their favorite opera is Phantom and it just makes me cringe.

But I digress.

I really love Phantom of the Opera. It was one of my first exposures to musicals. My parents had the double CD set when I was young and I wore that thing out. I was lucky enough to see it a few times in person and I was fascinated. The singing! The spectacle! The chandelier!

I absolutely pretend that the movie from 2004 does not exist. Emmy Rossum was too young to play Christine. Gerard Butler was not a good enough singer to be the Phantom. I’m sorry if it’s your favorite. I just…can’t.

Now I need to know your opinions about this show. Who’s your favorite Christine? Your favorite Phantom? This is a polarizing topic for people, so be nice in the comments!
