Here we go again! In case you haven’t noticed, each week we are building on the previous week to learn a new crochet stitch that you might encounter frequently in patterns. This week, we are tackling the double crochet, which I personally think is one of the most frequently used and useful stitches.
And just a reminder, I am using US crochet terminology for everything.

You’ll notice that this stitch is pretty similar to the single crochet. But it has one key difference: we yarn over before we insert our hook into the row below. Instead, our steps for this stitch are as follows:
- Start with one loop on your hook
- Yarn over
- Insert hook into row below and pick up the two top loops
- Yarn over and pull through the two loops
- You should have three loops on your hook now
- Yarn over and pull through two loops
- Yarn over and pull through the last two loops
- You should be left with one loop on your hook again
That seems like it was super fast and easy! Why? Because of the foundation we have built previously, learning the appropriate terminology and other stitches. We have taken the time to really understand the anatomy and mechanics of each stitch, therefore each additional stitch is easier to understand.
Practice your new double crochet stitch and see how you do! Did you find it easy? What challenges are you having with it?
