Let’s talk about family today. Family is so important to me, and that’s one reason why I started this blog. I wanted to pass along the traditions, skills, and crafts that my family taught me. Many people don’t have families that taught them these things, so why not create a place where they can learn as well.

You already know about Nanny, but she isn’t the only family member that I had teaching me these things growing up. I learned about gardening from my maternal grandfather, who had the biggest and most beautiful vegetable garden when I was growing up. He grew tomatoes, green beans, corn, broccoli, and so much more. I have such fond memories of stringing beans and hulling pecans, not necessarily because it was fun, but because it was family time that we were spending together.
My maternal grandmother sewed. And I mean sewed. She was talented in ways I can’t even begin to describe. She could look at an outfit, decide she wanted to make it, and then go home and make it without using a pattern. She just understood fabric and sewing enough to be able to recreate it without instructions.
My mother taught me to read sewing patterns. My great-aunts taught me about quilting and knitting, even though I rebelled against knitting and insisted on crochet instead. My aunts taught me about cross-stitch and beading. Other relatives taught me about canning and preserving foods. And honestly, they all taught me the importance of community. No one person can do everything, it’s about sharing your talents with other.
So here I am, sharing with you in the hopes that we can build our own little community. I’m sure you have talents and skills in different areas, and I’d love for you to share them with us as well. Please introduce yourself and share why you’re here.
As always, welcome, we’re happy to have you join us.
